Hospice nurses are at the front-line of caring for patients and are closely involved in administering complex medical and nursing care in a very personal, compassionate way to support patients who have complex conditions and painful symptoms. Its patients, many of whom have life-limiting conditions, and their families depend on the Northern Ireland Hospice for much needed care and support.

This has become even more challenging during the COVID-19 pandemic with Hospice services adopting best clinical practice to protect its patients, families and employees. Additional PPE must be worn, visitations are limited and increased hygienic procedures have implemented throughout the facility.

In 2019, the NI Hospice cared for 278 patients, 34% of whom were under the age of 65. Funding support from the McClay Foundation has helped to ensure Hospice nurses are able to care for a similar number of patients throughout the pandemic.
