Supporting EMMS International’s Centre of Excellence in palliative care

The McClay Foundation is involved in a number of local and international initiatives to advance health and wellbeing.

The following local project is partnering with EMMS International.

It is estimated that at least 125,000 people are currently living in Nepal with terminal illnesses, yet there is very little healthcare available to them. In April 2018, EMMS International started planning to build the Centre of Excellence in palliative care in Pokhara, Nepal. This Centre is to be a catalyst for widening access to palliative care in Nepal, particularly Western Nepal, where 80% of the population live, and over half are living in extreme poverty.

This year the McClay Foundation supported the construction of Nepal’s first ever Centre of Excellence in palliative care, providing compassionate, holistic care to transform lives through EMMS International.

The Centre includes essential equipment, furniture, supplies, essential staff and training and will help to care for the economic, social, spiritual and physical needs of patients there. The Centre aims to provide end-of-life services to 24,000 patients and includes a 4-bed annex to ensure COVID-19 patients are cared for.

The palliative care unit is now complete and was officially opened via a virtual event on Friday 20th November. Philip Diamond, a McClay Foundation Trustee, sent along his best wishes in a video message, which was screened during the opening ceremony and can be viewed here.

In addition, Baroness Sugg, UK Minister for Overseas Territories & Sustainable Development, delivered a message of support and committed to “double the public’s generous donations to EMMS International’s appeal so that young carers in Nepal can return to school safe in the knowledge that their loved ones are getting the care they deserve.”
